The Rev. Joe Gunby is pastor of Oconee Street United Methodist Church.
A native of Winder, Gunby moved to Athens in June 2016 to become pastor of Oconee Street UMC. With a master of divinity from the Candler School of Theology, Gunby has more than a decade of preaching and religious teaching experience, most recently as pastor at Bishop UMC. He has also preached at Tenth Street UMC in Atlanta, Middleburg UMC in North Carolina, and Providence UMC in Statham, Georgia.
Throughout his career, Gunby has demonstrated a passion for spreading the Word and love of God to the imprisoned and the homeless. A licensed Pastoral Facilitator with the Georgia Department of Corrections, Gunby has facilitated ministry training at Phillips State Prison and serves on the Advisory Council for Kairos Prison Ministry. At Tenth Street, Gunby expanded an existing feeding ministry and created a ministry to host neighborhood homeless people, while also creating a vibrant college student ministry.
Gunby is married to Julie Dotterweich Gunby, a nurse midwife and University of Georgia alum. They live in Athens with their three young children: Evangeline (Lena), Bernadette (Etta) and Simon.
