On #GivingTuesday 2023, you could give to many local organizations that help people today and work toward lasting change for tomorrow. We have found several local organizations that align with our vision of a more inclusive city. Here are a few of the efforts that Oconee Street UMC invests in with time and money. We invite you to learn more about them and donate as you are able. Link in bio. Last weekend, a meeting was held at the Classic Center to vote on the request of some churches to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church denomination. This is a somber and sad occasion, and we wish these churches and the people who attend them the best. The churches who are leaving the denomination have voted to do so largely because of disagreements of conscience over issues of Biblical interpretation relating to human sexuality. Our church is proud to support the work of @athrep22 , Athens Reparations Action, a nonprofit formed in support of, and with leadership from, living residents and descendants of the Linnentown neighborhood. This group works to raise awareness and provide financial redress for the lost wealth they experienced when the city of Athens and UGA officials used imminent domain procedures to take their homes and neighborhood land for building the high-rise dorms on Baxter Hill. We will be tabling on Saturday at Athens Pridefest. We welcome everyone in Athens looking for an inclusive, affirming, faith community, with an active youth and young adult program that are both welcoming to people of all gender identities and sexual orientations. Looking forward to a great day Saturday! You can support college scholarships while landing a great tailgating spot walking distance to Sanford Stadium. Send the church a DM if you have questions or want to reserve a spot for the season. As students pour back into Athens, now is the time to find a church that welcomes you … with all your questions about faith and desire to do good and need for an affirming community. We are right here, east of downtown, across from Mama’s Boy. Come for an 11 a.m. Sunday worship service, drop in for the college-age group at 7 p.m. Tuesdays or email OconeeStreetUMCyouth@gmail.com with questions. We are so happy to welcome Del & John Jennings, who recently joined Oconee Street UMC, along with Kat Anderson, who rejoined the church after living away from Athens for a time. Welcome! On July 30, about 50 people at Oconee Street UMC participated in a statewide reading of “My Shadow is Purple” in solidarity with Georgia teachers and their use of literature that is relevant, affirming, inclusive and meaningful to their PK-12 students. Many people also wrote notes of support to Cobb County teacher Katie Renderle, who was fired for reading this lovely story to her class. Oconee Street had a big group at the Clarke County library board meeting today, part of a large community turnout in support of keeping inclusive books available at the library, and resisting authoritarian calls for censorship. The people who work in the Athens Regional library system have faced harassment and difficulty with a rising number of challenges to inclusive and representative books. We thank the library and the board for staying vigilant against any groups that would seek to make the library less welcoming for marginalized youth.
